Saturday, June 9 - Art, AF1HS, Jim, K1CCT, and Bruce, N1AYS, provided communications for the Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride in Simsbury. The event consisted of three bike trails (a 10-mile, a 25-mile and a 50-mile trail) originating and ending at the Performing Arts Center in Simsbury Meadows. The 50-mile trail crossed into Massachusetts as for north as Westfield before returning into Connecticut. APRS was used on the three Mechanical Support Vehicles as well as on the 5 SAG wagons and all had comm capabilities back to Net Control at the Center. Ham radio operators were also stationed at three rest stops along the routes. Region 2 supported the event with Gary (KB1AWI) from Meriden and yours truly.  --  Art, AF1HS

On Sunday,  June 10th, a total of 12 ARES members from both Region Four South and Region Four North provided communications support for the Mystic YMCA Mystic River Triathlon. Operators covered the swim, bike, and run routes. Our new EmComm "safety green" vests provided a sharp appearance and made our operators easily identifiable. Liaison with local police, fire, and EMS officials working the event was coordinated by the NCS at the YMCA HQ pavilion.

A total of 14 hams participated in the Millstone Nuclear Power Station annual exercise on Thursday, June 21st.  Ron, K1VSC served as NCS for the ARES directed net. At the request of Tony Scalora, DEMHS Region Four Coordinator, Wayne, N1CLV served as the DEMHS-4 Operations Officer. Operators staffed EOCs in seven of the ten Millstone EPZ towns: East Lyme, Groton (City), Ledyard, Lyme, Montville, Old Lyme, and Waterford. Twelve exercise messages were handled using NTS format. Limited use of Airmail was attempted, but Telpac issues prevented its full utilization. More work is planned to get this digital mode fully operational.   --Wayne, N1CLV.
